Do you need a replacement boiler?

If you are finding that you are constantly forking out hundreds of pounds to fix up your old unreliable boiler or it keeps breaking down at the worst possible moment, it is probably time to invest in a new one.

It is all too easy to take the heat and hot water we get from our boilers for granted, but you will soon notice it once its gone and the truth is that our homes simply can’t operate properly without them.

In the winter, not having an operational boiler can actually be a serious safety hazard and it is vital you have your boiler repaired or replaced as soon as possible to restore warmth.

Some of the key signs that it might be time to have your boiler replaced include:

  • Strange gurgling or kettling noises when you turn your boiler on
  • A lack of heat or hot water
  • Regular repairs being required
  • The boiler system is more than 10 years old

These are some of the most important things to do when looking for a replacement boiler.

Call a gas safe engineer

At the end of the day, only a qualified gas safe engineer will be able to tell you for certain if you need a replacement boiler or your own can be repaired.

There are plenty of different places to find a reputable engineer in your area, from social media to simply asking around. A great place to start if you are new to the area is the Gas safe register which lists all of the qualified gas electricians in the UK.

Should I be getting a new boiler at all?

You have probably heard a lot of talk in the news over the last few years about the gradual fazing out of new gas boilers in the UK. If your gas boiler has broken down, it is understandable that you might wonder if you should really be considering an alternative and be worried about falling foul of restrictions further down the line.

First of all, let us reassure you. Gas boilers aren’t about to become illegal to own. It is only new boilers in new build properties that are set to be banned in 2025, so you won’t be penalised for replacing your existing one.

If you have made the decision to look at more renewable energy sources, an air source heat pump might be a good idea. Bear in mind, however, these units are not suited to every property type or size and you won’t get the same blast of instant heat that makes gas boilers so attractive to use.

At the end of the day it is completely up to you if you decide to get a boiler replacement or look in a new direction but modern gas boilers remain the most popular and most efficient way to heat domestic homes in the UK.
